A holistic approach to writing a book aligns the body, mind, emotions and soul and as a result helps you discover your true voice. This series looks at the 7 chakras and how they relate to the process of writing your book. Part seven looks at Consciousness.

One system of timeless wisdom which incorporates all of the qualities required to ignite the full potential of your writer's journey delivers profound insights via the 7 major energy centres in the body called the chakras.

Each centre reveals both universal principles and individual programming which govern life, love, learning ... and creative expression.

Read on for a simplified approach to incorporating more than just your mind to writing your book. See for yourself how much richer, deeper, and more rewarding your writing experience will be.

Level # 7 - Consciousness

Here are some keys to the centre of consciousness:

• Knowing
• Understanding
• Link to something bigger than self
• Beyond time and space

• Unity
• Infinity
• Mystery

One of the questions I invite writers to explore in the context of discovering the true source of their writer's voice is who am I before the writing begins?

This may sound like a strange question but it serves a very important purpose.

In order to answer it, you have to turn your attention inwards. The words point you in the direction of your inner space, the truth of who you really are behind all of the roles you play in life - including being a writer.

This is the true source of your unique writer's voice which you can learn to combine with the skills of crafting language on the page to reveal the unique voice which is truly your own.

Writing which comes from the inside out like this is powerful, authentic and timeless. The inside out process also links you to something far bigger than yourself ... all of which relates to level 7 - the centre of consciousness.

Many people recognise and have had experience of being 'in the zone', a term which is often used in the context of running.

It refers to a feeling of crossing a threshold onto a new level of energy and performance where the conscious, everyday mind makes way for what could be described as 'infinite awareness'.

This level of awareness is paradoxically both extremely focused and present in the moment whilst being simultaneously expansive, as well as beyond time and space.

When you are in the zone, there is no separation between you and whatever it is you are doing, whether that be running or writing. You and your actions become one leading to a deep sense of total knowing which guides you at every level.

The experience of infinite awareness is an echo of the pure consciousness of the 7th chakra. It is where we touch divine inspiration and where our most brilliant ideas are conceived.

Learning to embrace the mystery means that we are consciously connected to Source and feel as if we have returned home to ourselves at last.

As a result, our writing reaches an elevated level of clarity and purpose which infuses our communications with charisma, and leads us to the point where our voice is heard - on the page and in the world.

So here is my recommendation for you to connect more fully with the centre of consciousness and apply the energy to your writing:

Learn to meditate, or if you have already started, raise the bar on the depth, quality and regularity of your meditation practice.

Then schedule time to write immediately after your meditation session for a deeper, more aligned creative flow.

There are a multitude of different meditation techniques and it is important to find one which suits you as an individual.

My intention here is simply to raise your appreciation of the enormous contribution meditation can make to the quality of your writing - and to your life in general.

One of the main advantages of meditation is that it stills the chatter of your conscious mind and enables you to access new levels of awareness beyond the everyday functioning of your conditioned thoughts and feelings.

So I invite you to try this simple 3 step approach:

1. Sit upright with your spine straight and your feet flat on the floor.

Begin by releasing any tension in your body and imagine a warm glow above your head as if the sun was shining directly down on you.

Draw this warmth and light down through your body from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet and finally flowing into the earth beneath you. As it moves through each part of your body, feel the muscles release and relax.

2. Bring your awareness to your breathing.

Drop your attention to the area below your navel and feel your belly expand with each in-breath and contract back towards your spine with each out-breath.

When thoughts enter your mind, just let them float in and out again without allowing them to distract your focus.

3. Listen to the sound of silence, if necessary underneath and beyond any noise which may be around you.

Enjoy the still space you are now in for as long as feels right to you.

When you sense that your session is complete for that particular day, take a few deep breaths and stretch out your body before picking up with the rest of your day.

Or you can then go straight on to do some writing so that your words come from the still, silent space your meditation has led you to.
